‘Deadliest Catch’ alum speaks to local students about setting goals, perseverance
ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — On Monday, Nicholas “Sunshine” Tokman, a former cast member of the show “Deadliest Catch,” spoke to junior high students at Altoona Area School District about the importance of setting goals and striving to accomplish them.
Tokman used his experiences of battling 40ft waves, frigid temperatures and hoisting heavy machinery to emphasize his points.
While he worked as a commercial fisherman for about nine years, he was a cast member on the show for four years, and he got a firsthand look at what “exceptional perseverance” can lead people to achieve.
“My keynote, ‘Become your Captain – Catch your Future,’ the whole point of the presentation is just about redirecting the students’ attention away from the outside influences: trying to be good enough for their peers, their classmates, or maybe even their parents. I’m trying to bring the attention back on themselves, so they can chart their own path in life,” Tokman said.
