Deadliest Catch’s Canyon loses out on $5000 in earnings after failed drug test
Deadliest Catch engineer, Canyon, failed a drug test and therefore was sent home from crabbing season. He lost out on $5,000 after “knowing he wouldn’t pass” the test, which he done twice.
As a captain wanted to check his workers weren’t under the influence, Deadliest Catch cast member, Canyon, faced an abrupt end to his crabbing season. His co-worker had to tell him the bad news.
Engineer fails drug test twice
Engineer Canyon Willis was told the temperature of his urine was “off” by a drug test checker, which meant he had to wait another three hours to redo it. He had used someone else’s urine instead of his.
However, the long-time engineer, who has been friends with co-captain Jack Bunnell for seven years, already knew “he’s not going to pass” the test. It was carried out 20 hours after a successful offload.
When Canyon agreed to take the insurance-mandated drug test, the toxicology screener, Ken, told him that synthetic urine does not work. “It goes in a different direction where it has to be observed,” he said.
Co-worker told him bad news
The captain told cameras, “It’s a million-dollar operation. We’ve got to keep moving forward, we’ll find somebody.” He then instructed a deckhand to be the one to send Canyon home.
His co-worker, Jack, said he “was not happy with the decision” of letting Canyon go but had to be the one to inform him he can’t join them out at sea. “It’s tough, Canyon is one of my best friends,” he said.
“I might have disagreed with the decision but I also understand the decision, but the boat has to fish and make money. Reality check, I guess, you have to make decisions for the business,” Jack added.
Due to being sent home before crabbing season, Canyon lost $5K in earnings. His friend told him, “So just please, you’re going to lose out on five grand. Canyon told him, “I got you.”
Canyon then prepared to pack his bags and head home, promising he’d be there for the next crabbing season. He told him, “You come back in January. All you have to do is pass a drug test.”
