Captain Keith Colburn uses a ‘secret weapon’ on Deadliest Catch costing just $200
It’s safe to say Deadliest Catch captains have their work cut out when it comes to hauling tons of crab from the ocean. The weather conditions, medical emergencies, technical hitches, and crew clashes could be too much for anyone to deal with. But, Captain Keith Colburn reveals his ‘secret weapon’ for achieving success on the F/V Wizard.
At 61 years old, Captain Keith Colburn has likely seen it all on Deadliest Catch. He’s appeared on the Discovery Channel show since season 3 and returns for season 20 this year. In the high stakes and high-stress business of crab fishing on the Bering Sea, it’s no wonder Keith has gained notoriety for airing his frustrations over the years. However, it doesn’t stop some crew members setting pots right next to Captain Keith’s and worrying his own ship captain.
Deadliest Catch’s Captain Keith Colburn’s ‘secret weapon’
Captain Keith Colburn is known for being a successful crab fisherman.
Working in the same ranks as OGs Jake Anderson and Sig Hansen he has fans taking to Reddit threads to say: “…he’s a really good captain. Always catches the crab and makes lots of money for the crew.”
The reality TV star reveals he has a “secret weapon” that helps him hit his goals on the F/V Wizard.
Captain Keith says he uses the Fish Hawk TD – it’s an electronic device that provides critical water temperature and depth information to fishermen.
‘More consistent catches’ for $200
By basing his fishing technique on science – and not just luck – Captain Keith can get “more consistent catches” by using the Fish Hawk TD.
It’s a small device which is lowered into the ocean on a fishing line. It records water temperature every 5 feet from the surface to the bottom. The Fish Hawk TD has a 300-foot maximum operating depth.
The Fish Hawk brand saw the reality TV star had featured their product on the show and wrote online: “We were very excited to see one of our products featured in Episode 1 of Season 20.”
By using the $200 sensor, Keith and his crew haul up pots of red king crab and he attempts to go for the “motherlode.”
