Deadliest Catch captain breaks down in tears as Destination sinks in fatal voyage
Deadliest Catch often tells the tales of brave crab fishermen who spend the majority of their lives at sea attempting to make their fortune. Oftentimes, the cast experiences tragedy as many crab fishermen have passed away during the show’s 19 seasons. A major loss for Captain Sig Hansen came when he got awful news about the F/V Destination sinking.
Sig Hansen is no stranger to dealing with losses when it comes to colleagues. He has suffered many heartbreaks since his first appearance on the Discovery Channel show back in 2005. When he received the call about the Destination crab boat, Sig wanted to know whether his friends on board were still alive.
Deadliest Catch F/V Destination sinks
Crab fishing boat the Destination tragically sank in 2017 with all of its crew on board.
The Seattle Times reported in 2019 that six lives were lost. The crew aboard the ship were Captain Jeff Hathaway, Darrik Seibold, Charles Glen Jones, Kai Hamik, Raymond Vincler, and Larry O’Grady.
On February 8, the Destination made its fatal voyage as it left for Dutch Harbor.
Three days later, on February 11, an emergency signal alerted the Coast Guard to its sinking.
Captain Sig receives tragic news
During Deadliest Catch, the moment that Captain Sig Hansen receives the tragic news of the Destination is captured on camera.
A call from Casey McManus comes into the F/V Northwestern and Sig finds out that the F/V Destination and the six men aboard have gone missing in the Bering Sea.
Sig asks: “Are you talking about Jeff’s Destination, my buddy? What?”
The captain looks panicked as he’s told a “life ring, and a fuel slick” have “been found,” as well as other “debris indicative of a crab boat going down.”
Sig is clearly overcome with sadness and wipes tears from his eyes.
Casey apologizes on the call for Sig’s loss as he says he “knows he and Jeff were tight.”
Speaking through tears on the show, the captain said that his friends “didn’t die in vain,” as the Destination’s sinking has increased awareness about the risks of crab fishing, writes The Seattle Times.
